Disney+ has thrilled fans with a trailer for the highly-anticipated second season of Goosebumps with fresh references to the chilling R.L Stine book series.

Inspired by the best-selling horror novels, Goosebumps premiered in October 2023 and followed five teenagers who accidentally release a supernatural force into their home town and must force it back into captivity.

The adventure led the group to uncovering dark secrets about their parents' past. The ten-episode series debuted to mixed reviews but earned a positive 74% critics rating and 69% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Following its release, Disney announced the mystery drama would return with a new cast and plot. Friends alum David Schwimmer leads the crew as former botany professor and divorced dad, Anthony.

The new instalment, Goosebumps: The Vanishing, follows twin siblings (played by Sam McCarthy and Jayden Bartels), who visit their father for the summer and stumble upon "a threat stirring, triggering a chain of events that unravel a profound mystery." The series synopsis continues: "As they delve into the unknown, the duo find themselves entangled in the chilling tale of four teenagers who mysteriously vanished in 1994.”

Released on October 20, the official trailer has already amassed 3.6million views on YouTube and eagle-eyed fans have spotted the books that the season takes inspiration from.

Stay Out of the Basement

Schwimmer's character directly references this novel in the trailer, he says to his children: "I have one rule, stay out of the basement."

Published in 1992, Stay Out of the Basement follows a botanist who does experiments in his basement. When his children visit him to see his works, they see him bleeding and he yells 'stay out of the basement.' The siblings quickly start to question their father's work and set out to investigate the seemingly harmful plants for themselves.

The monster featured in the trailer is reminiscent of the blob in Stein's 1997 novel.

The supernatural tale follows aspiring horror writer Zackie Beaucham, who buys a typewriter in an antique shop. When he sits down to write his scary novel, he realises that everything he types on the page becomes a reality, triggering a spooky chain of events.

Monster Blood

Fans have also spotted that the monster in the trailer is akin to the Monster Blood creature. Also published in 1992, readers follow twelve-year-old Evan who visits an old toy shop and buys a can of monster blood.

He enjoys playing with it at first but the monster soon comes to life and starts growing out of control.

The Haunted Car

The trailer briefly shows an uncontrollable car, with one character yelling: "I'm not controlling the car." This lines up with the 1999 haunted car tale, which focused on a car enthusiast who buys a new car from a local seller and soon learns it has a mind of its own.

Readers have praised the upcoming season for including various beloved titles. In the comments of the trailer, one viewer wrote: "Thank you for meeting the OG Goosebumps fans as adults."

Another rejoiced: "Now THIS is what I call Goosebumps. I love it that so many different books are referenced in [this]. Goosebumps is finally getting the spotlight it deserves in this era. I hope these newer horror fans love Goosebumps as much as we 90s kids do. Viewer Beware! You're in for such a SCARE!!".

A third chimed in: "This is the moment we have all been waiting for."

Goosebumps: The Vanishing premieres on Disney+ on January 10, 2025
