Manchester City have broken 's unbeaten Champions League record - but some fans doubt the validity of their achievement.

The champions, who lifted the European Cup in 2023, hammered Sparta Prague 5-0 on Wednesday night to extend their unbeaten run to 26 games. That has surpassed the run set by Sir Alex Ferguson's United side between September 2007 and May 2009.

They claimed the in 2008 and then made the final the following year - losing to Guardiola's side. The last time City lost a game in Europe was when produced a stunning late show to beat them in May 2022.

The Manchester outfit used that as motivation to claim the title 12 months later - doing so for the first time. Last year they were knocked out in the last eight, which is where the grey area comes in.

City drew with Los Blancos in the Bernabeu and were then held once they returned to the Etihad. Real went on to win the tie on a penalty shootout, en route to claiming the trophy. But whilst Guardiola's side were knocked out they didn't technically lose the game.

FIFA do not count a penalty shootout loss as a defeat, instead putting it down as a draw. United meanwhile, throughout their unbeaten run, never had any ambiguity or debate over its validity.

That is why some fans have questioned the record. Specsavers social media account gave a witty response to City celebrating their unbeaten run as they said: "If you ignore the defeat, correct". That is a thought echoed by several fans.
