It must have happened to you that a friend or relative asked for a car and you handed it over to him without knowing whether he had a license or not. If you do this, then be careful in the future, because this kindness can prove to be costly for you. It may even come to a point where the police come to your house with handcuffs, and you have to go to jail. Delhi Police has said in a recent report that there is an 81 percent jump in such cases, which is becoming a very dangerous trend.
Delhi Police has said that this year the figures have increased by 81 percent compared to 2024. Police believe that letting a person drive without a license and adequate training poses a big safety risk. Along with the vehicle, the safety of its driver and other people walking on the road can also be affected by this. Such people can pose a threat to anyone by driving carelessly.
What do the figures say
According to Delhi Police figures, 1,05,945 challans were registered in the capital between January 1 and August 15 last year. These included letting an unauthorized person or minor drive or not having a driving license. This year, this figure has risen sharply to 1,91,874 in the same period. The main reason for the sharp increase in challans is the strictness of the police and the constant violation of traffic rules. In many cases, when the vehicle owner is traveling with a friend or relative, he gives the car or two-wheeler to someone who does not have a valid driving license. This happens mostly due to trust, and this trust later proves to be costly.
Trust proves to be costly.
Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Dinesh Gupta says that often, people's trust becomes costly. People ask for vehicles from friends or relatives for a short distance and wonder what will happen in such a distance. Such cases mostly come to light in residential areas. The police have identified the major areas where such violations happen the most. These include educational institutions and residential areas.
What is the punishment if caught?
Dinesh Gupta said that if a person is caught driving without a valid license, not only is that person punished for driving without a license, but the vehicle owner is also issued a challan under Section 180 (allowing unauthorized persons to drive) of the Motor Vehicles Act. Therefore, vehicle owners should never allow anyone to drive their vehicle without a valid and effective license. If an accident occurs during this time, the vehicle owner will be held responsible for it. He may have to go to jail along with a heavy fine. Dinesh said that instead of being afraid of this, people need to understand how dangerous it can be to allow people without a license to drive their vehicle.
