India's industrial output, measured by the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), dropped to a six-month low at 2.9% in February from 5% in January, data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on Friday showed.
Manufacturing output advanced 2.9% in February, electricity generation grew 3.6% and mining activity rose 1.6%, data showed. These sectors had grown by a revised 5.8%, 2.4% and 4.4%, respectively, in the previous month.
Economists polled by Reuters were expecting a growth of 4%.
The previous low was recorded in August last year when the growth remained flat at zero per cent.
The government also revised upward the industrial growth figure to 5.2% for January 2025 from the provisional estimate of 5% released in March.
"The deceleration was broad-based, with all the use-based categories, as well as two of the three sectors barring electricity, witnessing a slower growth in February 2025 vis-à-vis the previous month. While the growth performance of mining is expected to deteriorate in March 2025 relative to February 2025, this is likely to be offset by an uptick in electricity generation, amid steady manufacturing growth," said Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist, Head - Research & Outreach, ICRA Ltd.
The factory output, measured in terms of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), rose by 5.6% in February 2024.
The data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) showed that the manufacturing sector's output growth slowed to 2.9% in February 2025, down from 4.9% in the year-ago month.
Mining production growth dipped to 1.6% from 8.1% a year ago.
Power output growth also slowed to 3.6% in February 2025 from 7.6% a year ago.
In the April-February period, the IIP grew 4.1 %, down from 6% recorded in the year-ago period.
Mining production grew just 4.4% when compared to 6% in January 2024 and power output increased only 2.4% in the said month.
Industrial output increased by 4.2% in the April-January period, compared to 6% a year ago.
