Pahalgam terror attack: The aftermath
The attack has shaken the Valley and drawn strong condemnation from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman both cut short their foreign visits in response—Modi returning from Saudi Arabia, and Sitharaman from her trip to the US and Peru.
Back home, political parties in Jammu and Kashmir have thrown their weight behind a call for a Kashmir-wide shutdown on Wednesday as a mark of protest and to show unity with the victims' families.
The attack, which took place in the Pahalgam area of Anantnag, targeted a group of tourists and has sparked outrage across the country. In a show of collective grief and resistance, residents in several parts of the region—including Baramulla, Srinagar, Poonch, Akhnoor, and Kupwara—held candlelight marches. In Jammu, Bajrang Dal workers also staged a protest.
Among the deceased were five tourists from Maharashtra, as confirmed by the office of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Prime Minister Modi had earlier condemned the attack, promising swift justice.
“Those behind this heinous act will not be spared,” he said.
Home Minister Shah, who reached Srinagar on Tuesday evening, chaired a high-level security meeting with top officials to review the situation. In the meantime, security forces have launched a manhunt in the Baisaran area to track down those involved.
Delhi Police have also been placed on high alert, with increased surveillance at major landmarks and tourist sites.

Pahalgam: What we know so far
At least 26 people were killed and 20 others injured in a terrorist attack on Tuesday in the Pahalgam region of Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir, making it the deadliest strike in the Valley since the 2019 Pulwama attack.
Among the victims were two foreign nationals and two local residents, a senior official confirmed, though more details are still awaited.
The attack took place in Baisaran, a scenic meadow only reachable by foot or on ponies, where a group of tourists had gone earlier on Tuesday.
The Resistance Front (TRF), believed to be an offshoot of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba terror outfit, has claimed responsibility for the assault.
Pahalgam Attack News Live Updates
Preliminary intelligence suggests that the attackers may have infiltrated from the Kishtwar region in Jammu and used mountainous routes through Kokernag in south Kashmir to reach the remote site.
Officials believe the challenging terrain may have helped the militants carry out the operation undetected.
