Actress Rhea Chakraborty recently reflected on the profound effect the Sushant Singh Rajput case had on her family. Speaking at an NDTV event, she described how the ordeal reshaped them. According to her, the day the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) granted her relief, her entire household broke down in tears. She recalled embracing her brother and realising that her parents too had been permanently altered by the experience. In her words, the family that was once carefree had been transformed forever by the long and painful battle.
Response to the CBI Closure Report
Rhea went on to share her feelings about receiving a clean chit. She revealed that her mother first heard reports on television that the CBI had officially cleared her. Initially, Rhea dismissed the news, convinced that the media was unreliable and often distorted facts. She waited until her lawyer confirmed the information before believing it. Even then, she said she felt no personal joy. At the core of it, she had lost someone she deeply cared about, and no legal outcome could undo that. The relief, she explained, was mainly for her parents, who had endured constant scrutiny from society. For them, life had grown unbearably difficult, and she hoped the closure report might allow them to move with fewer restrictions.
Struggles with Public Perception
Chakraborty also pointed out that even after being exonerated, she struggled with public opinion. Many people insisted Sushant Singh Rajput’s death was somehow linked to her, but she always knew she bore no responsibility. Despite the CBI’s confirmation of her innocence, she could not feel true happiness. Her only comfort was the sense that her parents might finally find some peace in their daily lives.
"People said he did not go because of you. I always knew I hadn't done anything. But even when the clean chit came, I couldn't feel happy. I was only happy for my parents," she said.
The Case and Its Aftermath
On September 8, 2020, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested Rhea Chakraborty in connection with Rajput’s death, accusing her of supplying drugs. She spent nearly four weeks in judicial custody before being granted bail on October 7, 2020. Over the following years, her role was scrutinised by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the CBI. Ultimately, on March 22, 2025, the CBI submitted a closure report that ruled Rajput’s death as suicide, eliminated allegations of foul play, and cleared Chakraborty of all charges.
