When people are affected by this syndrome, they need much less sleep than normal. Usually, adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep every day, while people suffering from SSS syndrome feel completely refreshed and energetic in only 4 to 6 hours of sleep. This problem occurs due to biological and genetic reasons. SSS is a rare condition, and people suffering from it are called natural short sleepers. The number of such people in the world is very small.
The cause of this syndrome is not fully understood yet, but scientists believe that it may be due to a genetic mutation. In particular, a gene named DEC2 and changes in it reduce the body's need for sleep. For this reason, people with SSS can work normally even with less sleep. The biggest symptom of short-sleep syndrome is that a person needs less than 6 hours of sleep, and yet they can work normally throughout the day without getting tired. Such people do not feel lethargic during the day, nor do they feel sleepy frequently. There is no negative effect on their concentration, mental state, and ability to do physical work.

SSS may seem like a special ability, but it can also have some negative effects. Consistently getting less sleep can affect heart health, the immune system, and brain functioning in the long term. People with SSS may feel uncomfortable in social or family relationships due to differences in sleep habits from others. Therefore, it is important that if someone consistently feels tired even with little sleep, they should consult a doctor.
