At the Google I/O Connect India 2025 event, Google announced that its Android and Google Play ecosystem supported the creation of 35 lakh jobs in India in 2024. The figure, based on third-party evaluations, includes direct, indirect, and spillover employment generated through app development, publishing, and allied industries.

Alongside employment figures, Google shared that the Android and Play ecosystem contributed an estimated ₹4 lakh crore in revenue to Indian app publishers and the wider economy in 2024. This includes revenue generated via app sales, in-app purchases, subscriptions, advertising, and associated service demand.

According to third-party research cited by Google, 72 percent of surveyed Indian users said their first experience with the internet was on an Android device, 85 percent reported using their Android phone to access digital public services, and 69 percent noted their first interaction with AI occurred via an app on their Android phone.

India is one of the largest Android markets globally, with the platform powering over 95 percent of smartphones in the country. Google Play serves as a key channel for over 200,000 Indian developers, enabling them to build, distribute, and monetise apps for a global user base.
In addition to job creation, Google highlighted its continued investments in India’s digital and startup ecosystem. It is actively supporting AI-focused innovation through initiatives like the Google for Startups Accelerator: AI First, which provides mentorship, cloud support, and tools to early-stage companies working in generative AI and language technologies.
Google also reiterated its partnership with BharatGen at IIT Bombay, aimed at developing automatic speech recognition and text-to-speech models for Indian languages, reinforcing its commitment to inclusive digital infrastructure.
