Mumbai Indians produced a terrific all-round show to outplay Lucknow Super Giants by 54 runs in their IPL clash at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.
With their fifth victory on a trot, the Hardik Pandya-led side moved to the second position in the standings and are primed to reach the Playoffs.
After Ryan Rickelton (58) and Suryakumar Yadav (54) notched up fine half-centuries to help them mount 215, the bowlers led by the irrepressible Jasprit Bumrah (4/22) rattled the LSG batters to wrap up the proceedings for 161 in 20 overs.
Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran did offer some resistance for LSG in the chase against Mumbai Indians. However, their departures after scoring 34 and 27 put the visitors in a very difficult position to chase down 216.
Ayush Badoni presented a glimmer of hope in the company of David Miller and struck 35 off just 22 balls with two fours and as many sixes.
However, the moment he departed, caught by Will Jacks off Trent Boult, LSG’s task became all the more challenging with only Miller remaining the lone man standing as they reached 140/5 in 15 overs.
Once Miller was sent back to the pavilion by Jasprit Bumrah, Lucknow’s hopes were effectively over with only formalities remaining to be completed.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians put up another resounding batting effort to set up 215/7 in 20 overs.
It was a rather sedate start for the Mumbai Indians with LSG’s Mayank Yadav bowling four dot balls off the first four deliveries.
It took a wide for MI to open the account and then Ryan Rickelton slammed a straight drive down the ground for a four and a single off the last ball ensured they finished the first over at 6/0.
Rickelton was on fire in the second over against the other Yadav in the LSG camp, Prince.
The South African hoisted a six and then two consecutive boundaries off the fourth and fifth ball of the over as MI got their act together at 20/0.
Rohit Sharma’s pull hitting beast side was out in full flow when he blasted Mayank for two huge sixes off pull shots in the third over.
The MI veteran’s stay at the crease didn’t last long though as he was caught at shirt third man off Mayank, who had the last laugh with a slower ball.
However, Rohit had inflicted a fair amount of damage on the Super Giants as he normally does and with Rickelton still in the middle the Mumbai Indians were well set.
Rickelton was on absolute fire for the Mumbai Indians as he helped the home side go at a run rate of 11 in the powerplay.
He was hammering the LSG bowlers at a strike rate of 190 plus reaching 57 off just 30 balls after eight overs with MI at 85/1.
The Protean’s fiery innings was ended by Lucknow’s young sensation Digvesh Rathi who bowled a slower one and deceived him in the air as he holed out to Ayush Badoni to perish for 58.
Will Jacks played a quickfire 29 off 21 balls with three fours and a six and eventually got out bowled by a peach of a yorker by Prince Yadav.
Meanwhile, India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav was going berserk at the other end as he raced to 41 off 19 balls in the 15th over with four fours and three maximums keeping the tempo up despite the fall of wickets.
New partner Tilak Varma didn’t last long as he was snapped up by spinner Ravi Bishnoi caught by Prince Yadav for just six.
Skipper Hardik Pandya could not make much of an impact with the bat as he was castled by the pacy Mayank Yadav on the first ball after strategic time out in the 16th over.
At 157/5, Mumbai Indians were in a spot of bother chasing a 200-plus total which may still not be safe considering the batting firepower in the LSG ranks.
However, the presence of Suryakumar was the calming and reassuring influence and he brought up his fifty in just 27 balls in 55 minutes going at a strike rate of 200.
SKY was proving his credentials as Mumbai’s mainstay with another critical knock for the home side.
It took Avesh Khan to see the back of Surya as the latter was caught by Mitchell Marsh for 54 off 28 balls as LSG got some respite from the carnage.
Late flourish from Naman Dhir and Corbin Bosch ensured Mumbai Indians topped 200 in 18.5 overs and ultimately wrapped up the innings at 215/7 in 20 overs.
