Unlike fireflies that glow with cold light, this new culinary spot tucked away in the quiet lanes of Assagao, shines with the warmth of Goa’s timeless charm and soulful flavours from India and beyond.
The board reads JUGNU (meaning firefly), and a few more steps and you’ve instantly wandered into another world.
Standing at a height and overlooking the entire property, there’s more than one thing that catches your eye—a beautifully restored colonial-era bungalow that stands at the centre and a live station that’s caught in the rhythm of tossing the dough as the scent of pizzas being fired wafts your way.
Surrounded by lush greenery, it’s incredibly inviting to linger outdoors, wander about, take it all in and then settle in for that perfect spot.
In fact, the multiple dining corners really tempt you. Right from the cosy island seating area, the 20-seater garden corner dimly lit in the evenings, to an open-air alfresco spot beside a gentle , right next to bar number one.
That’s right, Jugnu doesn’t just stop at one bar. As you enter the air-conditioned bungalow a second bar welcomes you, and there’s a third, a secret bar that doesn’t reveal itself, unless you ask for it.
“We took about 13 months to construct this place and get it running,” says Kyrein, Jugnu’s manager and chef, as he speaks about the property. Founded by Sandeepraj Salian and Vicky Bachani, Jugnu officially opened its doors on January 22, this year.
“We had Akhlakh Mohammad on board for the interior design and , and Sandeep—our founder—has a keen eye for detail himself. That’s how the space has turned out to be so elaborately and tastefully done,” he adds.
And a walk through the property reveals just that. The interiors have a touch of timelessness, yet modern elegance. The indoor dining space, a cosy private 8-seater room, and curated touches like chandeliers, floral paintings, and soft music, set the tone.
Just like a little jugnu that wanders about with its own light, the drinks at the restaurant’s bar are crafted to take you on a journey. “I’d definitely recommend you try the Indian Origin,” says Kyrein and adds, “It’s made from the spirit of the mahua flower, found in Madhya Pradesh, which gives the unique notes to the drink. It comes with a base, golden glitters and also has mango caviars which we make ourselves.”
They also have other interesting cocktails like Let’s Go to Mexico, Jugnu Meets a Bee and some fun mocktails like Passionately Yours, Kokum in Thailand and Mapusa that have stories of their own.
When it comes to food, the menu has been curated by Chef Ajay Chopra, bringing his love for Indian infused with a twist of innovation.
You get a glimpse of what’s in store when you read the names of appetisers like Chicken Harissa Popcorn, Watermelon Som Tam Salad and Chicken Cafreal Skewers.
Jugnu’s Neapolitan-style pizzas, also make the perfect meal starters that are baked and packed with the freshest ingredients and toppings.
For a hearty main course there’s again a variety to pick from — noodles, Goa’s humble fish curry, Dhaba Wala Kadai Paneer, Solapur-style Country Chicken, to Chicken Donne Biryani. Just follow your cravings.
Even if you feel there’s no room for more, let your eyes rest on the delicious that feature Ispahan Tres Leches, Crème Catalana, Tiramisu Style Serradura and Rich Chocolate and Almond cake. You won’t be able to resist any and will end up ravishing the sweetest indulgence.
That’s what Jugnu is all about, a little adventure, diving in a feast of flavours and getting lost in a world of its own.
