Callum Woodhouse, who plays Tristan Farnon in the beloved Channel 5 period drama All Creatures Great and Small, has revealed his favourite co-star ahead of the new series.

The sixth instalment of the nostalgic show is due to hit screens this week, with one cast member already hinting at significant changes for the Darrowby locals.

Ahead of the fresh episodes, Channel 5's official X account shared a sneak peek featuring Callum introducing fans to a very special cast member.

In the clip, he announces: "Let me introduce you to one of my favourite members of the cast. Ernie."

He then approaches an adorable Golden Retriever dog and affectionately pats him, reports the Manchester Evening News.

He continued: "This is Ernie, who plays Jess. He's a good boy. A very good actor, he can play the opposite sex!"

When quizzed about what it's like to work with so many animals on set, the actor was full of praise, describing it as amazing.

Callum admitted: "I much prefer hanging out with the animals than the people, actually. I'm usually found with all the dogs, having cuddles like this. Ernie absolutely loves cuddles as well, as you can see."

In a playful dig at his fellow actors, the Channel 5 star cheekily suggested that the animals behave better on set than the human cast.

He quipped: "Not including me, of course. I'm very well behaved. I always get to set very early. But, definitely the animals, 100%."

Callum is set to reprise his role as Tristan in the new series, joining the likes of Nicholas Ralph as James Herriot and Samuel West as Siegfried Farnon.

Anna Madeley will also be returning as Mrs. Hall, alongside Rachel Shenton who plays the capable Helen Herriot.

However, there are some fresh faces joining the cast this season, with Lucy-Jo Hudson, Gaia Wise, Jonathan Hyde, Philip Martin Brown and Chris Gascoyne making their All Creatures debut.

The synopsis for the upcoming series reveals: "This time, we find our beloved Skeldale gang in a somewhat different situation as we join them in 1945, just as the war in Europe is coming to a close. We arrive back in Darrowby to veterinary advancements, expanded families, and new faces as they all look ahead to a brighter and more peaceful future.

"This season will see Herriot's wonderful characters navigating the opportunities that a new world brings, a host of animals great and small, and of course, each other."

All Creatures Great and Small returns to 5 on Thursday, September 25 at 9pm.
