Huge disappointment for Donald Trump as key part of state visit scaled back

PresidentDonald Trumphas been in for a bit of disappointment during his second state visit, with one major factor being scaled back considerably.

After landing on the Windsor estate with First Lady Melania Trump this afternoon, President Trump was given a warm welcome by senior members of the royal family, as well as plenty of pomp and splendour during a military display in the Windsor Castle quadrangle.

However, adverse weather conditions mean that this visit perhaps won't be as spectacular as his first, with a planned flypast originally due to take place over Windsor Castle having been reduced. For a president who enjoys spectacle and being publicly celebrated, it's possible this will come as a somewhat bitter blow.

Four F-35 military jets had been due to take part in today's display - two F-35Bs from number 207 Squadron, the United Kingdom's F-35B Operational Conversion Unit based at RAF Marham, and two F-35As from the 493rd Fighter Squadron, United States Air Force, based at RAF Lakenheath.

This would have signified a historic moment, marking the first time US and UK aircraft have flown together for this sort of visit, and, importantly, symbolising a sense of unity between the two very different nations.

Although a Red Arrows display did still go ahead, these planes will no longer take to the skies.

This afternoon, the Red Arrows flew over Windsor Castle for their flypast, with both King Charles and President Trump applauding the display, as blue, white and red smoke filled the skies.

Ahead of the flypast, King Charles and President Trump joined Queen Camilla and Melania on the steps leading out onto the East Lawn. British and US military personnel stood in silence as the two couples made their way to their seats to view the Beating Retreat.

King Charles could be seen looking at President Trump before they took their seats as the ceremony began, and could be seen chatting with both him and wife Camilla.

Earlier this afternoon, Kensington Palace issued a statement revealing that Prince William, Princess Kate, and the Trumps had a “warm and friendly” meeting inside Windsor Castle. No details of what was discussed during this discussion have been released by the Palace.

Not everybody has been happy about POTUS landing on UK soil; however, protesters have taken to the streets as the visit continues.

As previously reported by the Mirror, crowds of people congregated on the streets of Windsor ahead of the Red Arrow flyover.

Speaking outside Windsor Castle, with a Ukrainian flag, protester Yelena Radjenovic told the Mirror: “Trump and the people around him, his government, their behaviour is totally unacceptable.

“It's aggressive, they're bullies, they're self-serving, and I really dislike the government, which is why I'm here.”

When asked what she wanted the Prime Minister Keir Starmer to speak to the US President, Yelena stated that Ukraine was the number one issue for her, urging: “Be much, much stricter with Putin and stop rolling the red carpet out for Putin. So definitely Ukraine is the number one issue.”
