Over 16,600 Drunk Driving Challans Issued in Delhi in Just 6 Months, Northern Range Tops the List

The Delhi Traffic Police has issued a staggering 16,608 challans for drunk driving in the national capital between January 1 and July 15, 2025. This translates to an average of over 81 challans issued daily, highlighting the persistent issue of intoxicated driving across the city.

Area-Wise Breakdown

The recently released data shows clear variations in the number of challans across different regions of Delhi:

• New Delhi Range:
  Despite including high-security and VIP zones like Connaught Place, India Gate, Janpath, and Chanakyapuri, this region saw the lowest number of challans – only 1,370 cases.

• South and South-East Delhi:
  Known for nightlife hotspots such as Hauz Khas Village, Lajpat Nagar, and the Qutub Minar area, these zones recorded 2,424 challans.

• East, North-East, and Shahdara:
  These combined areas witnessed 3,183 challans. Authorities say that public alcohol consumption in these zones is a key contributor.

• Central Range (North and Central Delhi):
  Covering Delhi University’s North Campus, Kashmiri Gate, and Old Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, this range saw 2,779 challans.

• West Delhi, Dwarka, and Western Range:
  Including areas such as Punjabi Bagh and Rajouri Garden, these regions accounted for 2,271 cases.

• Northern Range (Rohini, Outer North, North-West Delhi):
  Topping the chart, this range reported the highest number of challans at 4,581, indicating a serious concern in these parts of the city.

Alcohol in Public a Major Factor

Police officials attribute the rising numbers in certain areas to the high incidence of alcohol consumption in public places, especially near popular markets, nightlife spots, and roadside liquor vendors.
