After the retirement of captain Rohit Sharma and star batsman Virat Kohli from Test cricket, India's head coach Gautam Gambhir has reportedly asked the BCCI for his full control over the team. According to a report published in Dainik Jagran, Gambhir came into this setup with the idea of ending the superstar culture of Indian cricket.
Gautam Gambhir reportedly played an important role in removing Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the Test setup. A week before the selection of India's team for the England tour, Gambhir and selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar had made it clear to the senior players that the team now wants to move forward with young players, which was the reason why the old players announced their retirement in quick succession.
Gambhir's hand in Rohit-Virat's retirement?
This is the first case when a head coach has played an important role in ousting the two biggest stars of the Indian cricket team. Before this, the Indian team was run by its captain. All the big decisions were taken by the captain. No matter how big a name he had as a coach, he always remained behind the scenes.
Only Bumrah can challenge Gambhir's decisions.
The report further states that if Shubman Gill becomes the captain, he will listen to everything Gautam Gambhir has to say, as he is still young. He may be projected as a future superstar, but he is still not at the stage where he can challenge Gambhir's decisions. The only cricketer in the current Indian Test team who could perhaps counter Gambhir's strategy is fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. If Bumrah does not have fitness issues, he will be the captain's first choice.
Gill's captaincy will suit Gambhir.
Bumrah was appointed vice-captain during Rohit Sharma's tenure and has also led India in three Test matches in England and Australia. Since he is very valuable as a fast bowler and his workload needs to be managed, it was not possible to give him full-time captaincy. Therefore, even if Gill is appointed captain, Gambhir will have full control of the team as he wants.
Gautam Gambhir wants complete control.
Take the recent examples of Ravi Shastri and Rahul Dravid. They have always been supportive of captains Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The new report claims that now, after the retirement of old veterans like Rohit, Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin, all the decisions will be taken by Gautam Gambhir. The report says, 'After losing the home series against New Zealand and losing the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, Gambhir had requested complete freedom from the board.'
