BBC Breakfast interrupted as host announces devastating 'breaking' death news

BBC Breakfast was interrupted on Sunday as Ben Boulos announced some devastating news. As a breaking news banner flashed across the screen, Ben shared an update with viewers.

He said, "Ukraine's Prime Minister has confirmed that the Cabinet building in Kyiv was hit in a huge wave of Russian drone attacks this morning.

"It is the first time the building has been hit. Our Eastern Europe correspondent, Sarah Rainsford, is in Kyiv and joins us now. How significant is it that the building has been hit for the first time?"

Sarah appeared via video link in Kyiv, where she explained, "As you can see, this street behind me here, and the fire engines, the firefighters all the way up that street there.

"This is essentially the official heart of Kyiv, where all the administrative buildings are and the government buildings.

"The parliament is just up the hill, the presidential palace just a little further away, and this is the first time that the cabinet ministers' building, the government building, any government building, has been hit in the capital Kyiv."

Sarah continued to explain how "significant" this incident was. She said, "The Prime Minister has talked about the top floors of that building being on fire. We've seen pictures this morning, around about six o'clock, we saw a massive plume of smoke just here coming up from that building.

"It's being described as a drone strike. But at the same time, we saw two cruise missiles flying very close to where we were, extremely fast across the heart of Kyiv.

"This was a massive aerial attack by Russia on Ukraine, the biggest yet, more than 800 drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles fired in combination against Ukraine."

The BBC correspondent went on to address the number of deaths and casualties "across the country".

She added, "It's not just this administrative building, the government building that's been hit. There were residential buildings here in Kyiv, very badly damaged.

"A lot of fires. We know that a woman and a one-year-old baby have been killed this morning here in Kyiv in this latest attack, and there are other casualties across the country yet again, underlining that whilst President Putin talks about being ready to discuss peace, he clearly is continuing to launch attacks.

"Russia is launching attacks across the country. There's no sign at all of this war ending or that Russia has any intention of doing that."
