ITV fans had been waiting six years for Robert Sugden to return to Emmerdale, but did he manage to stop Aaron from marrying John in time? During Friday's episode (May 30th), viewers at home were finally told what was going to happen at the altar, and whether Aaron was going to choose John or his former lover, Robert. Sadly, those who wanted Robert and Aaron to get their happy ending did not get the outcome they'd hoped for, as Aaron chose John and went ahead with the ceremony. Many followers took to social media to voice their reaction to the nail-biting episode, with some left devastated that Aaron didn't choose Robert.
One person furiously said on X, "AARON MARRIED JOHN! WHAT IS THIS ?!" as another person similarly commented, "Idk why aaron married John. Why waste everyone's time with an affair ."
A third similarly said, "How soon can they get the marriage annulled? ."
Earlier in the week, Robert, played by Ryan Hawley, returned to the Dales after spending six years in prison for killing Lee Posner (Kris Mochrie).
But after serving nearly half of his 14-year sentence, Robert made his way back to the village to put a stop to Aaron and John's wedding. John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth), who happens to be Robert's half-brother, recently had his past exposed in explosive scenes last week.
Devotees of the drama will remember that John's ex-fiance, Aidan Moore, has been languishing in a coma at Hotten General for the past few days.
Victoria Sugden (played by Isabel Hodgins) stumbled upon John's dog tags inscribed with the name Aidan, which threw her into confusion over her half-brother's true identity.
John spun a tale, asserting that Aidan was a fallen comrade from his time serving in Afghanistan. The stark truth is that Aidan lies in a hospital bed in a vegetative state, with his mother, Cathleen (acted by Julia Watson), as a constant visitor.
Yet, the following day (May 21), John's demeanour was suspicious as he stood by his former flame's bedside.
A medical professional cautioned Cathleen against pushing her son too hard to communicate. John comforted Cathleen, assuring her of her good intentions towards her son, while also slipping in the possibility that Aidan might not regain his memories. He further confided his weariness, hinting at an end to his visits to Aidan with the words: "didn't know how long he could do this for".
enthusiasts are now utterly persuaded that John is plotting to murder Aidan as a desperate measure to conceal the true circumstances behind Aidan's coma. Having already ended Nate Robinson's life and concealed Anthony Fox's deceased body, his capability for darkness is clear.
At the end of Friday's episode, it was revealed that a body had been recovered from the lake by police. Chas and Cain Dingle were left in shock alongside Ruby and Caleb Miligan, before the episode ended on a dramatic cliffhanger.
As Aaron and John set off on their honeymoon, suspicions were started to rise as to who was in the lake - could it be Amthony Fox's body?
