Prince Harry's awkward 'mistake' after late Queen gifted him Frogmore Cottage

After stepping down from their royal duties, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were evicted from the property by King Charles.

The King is reportedly now considering Prince Andrew, who has been in a dispute with the monarch over his current residence at Royal Lodge, as the new occupant of Frogmore.

At the time, the Sussexes were thrilled to accept the late Queen's generous gift. However, they've since been labelled "out of touch" for assuming they would always retain access to the luxury cottage.

Royal expert Tom Quinn explained that this expectation "speaks volumes" and likely contributed to Harry's distress over his father's decision.

In an exclusive interview with The Mirror, Quinn said: "Harry and Meghan imagined Frogmore would always be there for them, even if they came back to the UK for just a few weeks each year and even if they were no longer working royals."

The eviction process was initiated in January 2023, just one day after the release of Harry's explosive memoir Spare.

Although the formal proceedings began then, the couple's official move-out date was backdated, and they finally left Frogmore on June 29, 2023.

According to Quinn, this date holds particular significance for Harry, as it marked a turning point in his strained relationship with his father. The author explained: "At the time, few people realised what a slap in the face the eviction from Frogmore felt like for Harry - it was the last straw. Harry was absolutely furious and in tears about being evicted from Frogmore. He felt his father had no right to do it and saw it as an act of pure vindictiveness."

Quinn added that Harry struggled to see the connection between stepping down as a working royal and losing access to his royal residence.

"Harry took it as a cruel rejection - a painful reminder of all that he felt when his father fought with his mother during their long, drawn-out divorce." The author further noted: "For many, Harry is just a poor little rich kid behaving like a spoiled brat, but Harry sees himself as the eternal victim."

Frogmore Cottage, a five-bedroom home located on the grounds of Windsor Castle and just a short distance from where and Princess Kate live, underwent significant renovations in 2019, costing taxpayers £2.4 million.

When Harry and Meghan gave up their royal titles and relocated to the United States, they agreed to repay the costs of the refurbishmentsand handed the keys to and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, in November 2020.
