Stubborn carpet stains can be cleaned instantly if you swap bleach for . According to , harsh chemicals are not necessary to keep floors clean from the daily wear and tear of spilt drinks and muddy shoes.

The website recommends cleaning the carpet with baking soda and white vinegar. This green is inexpensive, easy to use and safe for pets. You'll need a box of baking soda, white vinegar, water, a spray bottle, a roll of paper towels, a scrub brush, cleaning cloths and a vacuum cleaner. The entire process can take between four and 12 hours.

First, clear the and remove surface dirt with the vacuum. Then, do a spot test - this method is "generally safe" but highly absorbent fibres are prone to damage, so do a quick test on a hidden area.

Next, generously sprinkle the stain with dry baking soda and spritz it with a mixture of half water, half vinegar (this can be diluted more to your preference).

Blot the stained area with a paper towel and spray the surrounding area with just water. The carpet should be damp but not wet.

Then, massage the solution into the carpet fibres with a scrub brush, careful not to scrub too hard. Scrub in one direction to lift dirt and wipe away debris with a cleaning cloth.

Once the carpet is cleaned, allow it to air dry for up to 12 hours, the longer the better. When it is fully dry, vacuum the area to remove any remaining baking powder.

Crown Cleaners says that this process can be done to the entire carpet monthly, but can also be great for a mid-week clean to freshen up when you don't have time to steam the floor.

Baking soda can also be used to remove pet odours and other bad smells. Simply sprinkle the area with baking soda and add a few drops of essential oil, allow to sit for at least 15 minutes and then vacuum.
