Padmini Kolhapure, Tejaswini Kolhapure and Talat Aziz are all set to present the story of legendary singer Begum Akhtar through the play titled Ammi Akhtari. Directed by the acclaimed Saif Hyder Hasan, it will be staged on October 25 and 27.
Padmini Kolhapure on playing Begum Akhtar in play Padmini Kolhapure plays Begum Akhtar, whereas Tejaswini Kolhapure is her devoted student Sukhi. Talat Aziz renders 13 of Begum Akhtar’s classic ghazals and thumris. In an exclusive interview with Zoom, Padmini opened up about the responsibility of playing a real-life character on stage. The actress said it is impossible to look like Begum Akhtar but her legacy can be celebrated through the performance. ALSO READ: She said, “When you are playing a real-life character, there is a lot of material that you can read up and get into. Begum Akhtar was not an out-of-the-box character. She was a real, normal person. One cannot look like her, behave like her but you can bring her back to life through the performance.” Love playing Begum Akhtar: Padmini The actress added, “Her ghazals are going to be sung by Talat Aziz and it is going to be a phenomenal experience for the audience. It will have a great recall value. People who have known her, are not aware of who she was, all are going to see who Begum Akhtar was. I wouldn’t say it is a huge responsibility because I love playing her. I feel her. Yes, it is not possible to feel the another person but if you can try and understand what her life was all about, then you can bring it out and portray it to the audience.” Ammi Akhtari play will be staged in Mumbai exclusively.You may also like
