Guwahati: With the Assam bypolls knocking at the door, the BJP-led alliance in the state is confident of retaining four assembly seats and acknowledged a formidable challenge in the fifth seat next month.

On Sunday, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma affirmed that the BJP-led alliance had its incumbent MLAs in four constituencies – Dholai, Behali, Sidli, and Bongaigaon – while conceding the absence of a sitting MLA in the Samaguri seat. The seats remained unoccupied following the election of the respective MLAs to the parliament during the Lok Sabha elections this year.

“The erstwhile MLAs of the four constituencies, now serving as MPs, have undertaken the responsibility to invest their utmost efforts in ensuring the victory of our candidates in these seats. I am steadfastly convinced that we will triumph in these four constituencies. Although we lacked representation in the fifth seat, we shall leave no stone unturned in our endeavours. I firmly believe that with the unwavering support of the people, we stand a strong chance of emerging victorious in that constituency as well,” he elaborated.

Slamming the Grand Old Party, Sarma, who also serves as the BJP’s general secretary, highlighted that the Haryana assembly election results have unequivocally demonstrated their true standing and prowess. “The Congress workers here procured firecrackers from Guwahati, anticipating a triumph in Haryana. However, the outcome defied their expectations,” he added.
