Ranchi: Ajsu-P has settled for lesser seats under the NDA alliance for the upcoming state assembly elections in Jharkhand as the party wants to send a message of unity among voters of the coalition, stated party’s chief spokesperson Deosharan Bhagat on Friday.

Talking to TOI after party president Sudesh Mahto jointly addressed a press meet at the BJP headquarters, Bhagat said: “During 2019 state assembly elections, BJP and Ajsu-P fought separately, and both the parties lost closely in about one dozen seats. The division of votes helped the JMM-led alliance to come to power. We do not want the 2019 factor to repeat in the coming elections, so we did not adopt a rigid attitude.”

In 2019, Ajsu-P had demanded 17 seats for the state assembly elections but was offered around 12. Miffed, the party, which holds a considerable sway among Kurmi electorate, broke away from the alliance and contested from 53 seats even though it won only from Silli and Gomia. The party got 8.10% votes in the previous elections.

Bhagat said with Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stating that there may be changes in a few seats the party is hoping that its share would increase. Meanwhile, party sources said there may be some seats where Ajsu-P and BJP workers may fight under each other’s symbol to ensure winnability.

Notably, BJP is indulging “appeasement politics” to keep its allies in good humour and has taken less share than in 2019 when it contested in 79 seats and won 25 seats. Likewise, the Ajsu-P fielded candidates in 53 seats and won in two.

Mahto also denied rumours doing the rounds that he was upset after getting less seats.
