Charlie Woods , the 16-year-old son of golf legend Tiger Woods , fell short in his bid to qualify for the 2025 U.S. Open after shooting a 3-over-par 75 at Wellington Golf Club in Florida on Thursday. His score left him seven strokes behind the qualifying mark of 68, marking the second consecutive year he has failed to make it past the local qualifier.

While Woods' performance fell short of advancing to the 36-hole final qualifying stage, it was an improvement over his 2024 attempt, when he posted a 9-over 81 at the Legacy Golf and Tennis Club in Port St. Lucie. Despite not qualifying, the young golfer’s efforts were a step forward in his journey to join the ranks of elite golfers, with a total of 10,202 entries for this year's U.S. Open.

The 125th edition of the U.S. Open, one of golf's most prestigious tournaments, will be held from June 12-15 at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. Notably, Woods’ father, Tiger Woods, will also be absent from the tournament due to an ongoing recovery from a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Tiger Woods' Recovery and Absence from U.S. Open

Tiger Woods, 49, is recovering from surgery after rupturing his left Achilles tendon during a training session at home. The 15-time major champion, who hasn’t competed in a tournament since the British Open last July, confirmed his injury in March, saying in a statement, "As I began to ramp up my own training and practice at home, I felt a sharp pain in my left Achilles, which was deemed to be ruptured." Woods underwent surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida, with Dr. Charlton Stucken performing a minimally-invasive tendon repair.

Before the surgery, Woods had hoped to participate in the Masters Tournament in April but ultimately had to withdraw due to the severity of his injury. The absence of both Woods father and son highlights a quiet year for the Woods family at the U.S. Open.

A Record Number of Entries for the U.S. Open

This year's U.S. Open received a record number of 10,202 entries, with several notable figures in sports attempting to qualify, including former NFL quarterback Tony Romo , tennis player Mardy Fish, and NHL player J.T. Miller. Despite the stiff competition, Charlie Woods’ strong showing continues to build his reputation as an up-and-coming golfer with potential.

Tiger Woods' legacy in the U.S. Open is a notable one, with three victories in the tournament among his 15 major championships. However, unlike his son, Tiger never had to go through the early stages of local qualifying. He was exempt from local qualifying from 1992 to 1994, largely due to his success in the U.S. Junior Amateur titles. His first U.S. Open appearance came in 1995 when he was still in high school, marking the start of an illustrious career that would go on to include three U.S. Open wins.
