Media personality Kayla Nicole is making it clear—she's no longer interested in being seen solely as “Travis Kelce’s ex-girlfriend.” Speaking candidly on the Second Wind podcast, Nicole opened up about the emotional rollercoaster of navigating public attention following her long-term relationship with the Kansas City Chiefs star, and how she’s now taking control of her own narrative.
Kayla Nicole says she’s more than just someone’s ex and demands to be heard
Nicole and Kelce were in an on-and-off relationship for nearly five years before officially breaking up in 2022. Since then, Kelce’s high-profile romance with global pop icon Taylor Swift has placed even more scrutiny on Nicole, who admits that being associated with the NFL tight end has often overshadowed her own voice and career.
“People will always say, ‘Get over it,’ which is so interesting. And to them I'd say, ‘You too,’” she stated during the podcast, calling out critics who diminish her feelings or reduce her identity to the breakup.
Despite the challenges, Nicole has managed to turn the situation into an opportunity. “Life handed me lemons and I made a lemon martini out of it and that upsets people,” she explained. “My authenticity, my transparency, my story—sharing my story—that really is my superpower.”
Media spotlight brings pressure, but Kayla Nicole is learning how to own it
Nicole, who is still relatively new to the world of public life, acknowledged the difficulty of navigating interviews and media coverage. She admitted she was initially unprepared for the way headlines would distort her words, often pulling out dramatic quotes that didn’t reflect the full context of her story.
“I was going into interviews thinking a little naively like, ‘Oh, they just want to hear my story,’” she said. “You sit down and you do an hour-long interview with someone and the headline is maybe a one sentence that you said of, ‘Yeah, I was heartbroken and devastated because I went through a breakup and that's the headline.’”
Nicole is now determined to shift public perception and define herself beyond a former relationship. “It's like, 'Damn, girl, did you listen to anything?'” she said, referring to those who ignore her growth. “I am human and I take it with a grain of salt now. One day they're going to have to stop calling me someone’s ex.”
