IND vs AUS: Why India vs Australia 5th T20I in Brisbane has been stopped

Send Push
The ongoing fifth T20I match between India and Australia at The Gabba was interrupted due to severe weather and lightning. India had scored 52 runs without losing any wickets in 4.5 overs when the players were forced to leave the field.

Spectators in the front rows were evacuated to covered areas in the stands for safety.

"It is unsafe to remain in open areas. Please seek shelter under cover and follow instructions," displayed the severe weather alert on the stadium's scoreboard.

Weather radar indicated heavy rainfall expected to last an hour at the stadium, suggesting a potentially lengthy delay.

Before the rain interruption, Abhishek Sharma survived two early chances to remain unbeaten on 23 runs. He achieved the milestone of becoming the second fastest Indian to reach 1000 T20I runs. His partner Shubman Gill was batting confidently at 29 not out.

Australia won the toss and chose to field first. Abhishek faced two dropped catches in the powerplay - initially by Glenn Maxwell at long-off from Ben Dwarshuis's bowling, followed by Dwarshuis himself misfielding a pull shot against Nathan Ellis at the boundary.

Despite his shaky start, Abhishek recovered well to score two boundaries. He reached the 1000-run milestone in T20I cricket in his 28th innings since his debut in July 2024.

Gill looked composed at the crease, hitting six boundaries to provide India with a strong start before the weather intervention.

If the match gets abandoned due to rain, India will secure the five-match series with a 2-1 lead.
