The ongoing fifth T20I match between India and Australia at The Gabba has been suspended due to severe weather and lightning. India had reached 52 without loss after 4.5 overs when the play was halted, prompting evacuation of front-row spectators to sheltered areas.
If the match is declared a no-result, India will secure the series 2-1, making Australia more eager for play to resume. The deadline for a shortened 5-over match is 5 PM IST.
"It is unsafe to remain in open areas. Please seek shelter under cover and follow instructions," read the severe weather alert on the stadium's scoreboard. Weather radar indicates heavy rain expected to continue for an hour at the stadium.
Before the rain interruption, Abhishek Sharma remained unbeaten on 23, becoming the second-fastest Indian to reach 1000 T20I runs. His partner Shubman Gill stood not out at 29.
India was asked to bat first, with Abhishek surviving two dropped chances in the powerplay. Glenn Maxwell missed a catch at long-off from Ben Dwarshuis's bowling, followed by Dwarshuis dropping a miscued pull shot off Nathan Ellis at the boundary.
Despite his shaky start, Abhishek managed to score two boundaries and achieved his 1000-run milestone in T20Is in just 28 innings since his debut in July 2024.
Gill displayed confident batting at the other end, striking six boundaries to provide India with a strong start before weather interrupted play. If the match cannot be completed due to rain, India will win the five-match series 2-1.
