OpenAI creates more 'headache' for Apple and Google; launches its own version of app store: Here's what it means for users

In a move to disrupt the mobile app ecosystem, ChatGPT creator OpenAI has announced its own version of the app store. The company has revealed that the app store will be built directly into ChatGPT. As reported by Business Insider, the OpenAI revealed about the new app store at its s DevDay event. The company has also revealed that the platform will enable the users to interact with the apps using their natural language and will also be able to reshape how people discover and use digital services. With more than 800 million weekly users, ChatGPT is now more than just a regular chatbot. ChatGPT is now becoming a hub for personalised and interactive apps. The service is now posing to be a direct challenge to tech giants Apple and Google , whose app stores are already dominating the market.

ChatGPT becomes a conversational app platform
According to a report by Business Insider, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the new experiecne as “a new generation of apps that are interactive, adaptive, and personalized — that you can chat with.” Users will now be able to ask ChatGPT to perform tasks such as creating a playlist using Spotify or finding properties on Zillow. The system will also prompt users to connect apps and also select what data to share, offering a more privacy-conscious and conversational interface as compared to the traditional apps.


SDK and monetization tools for developers

Along with this, OpenAI has also introduced a software development kit (SDK) which will allow the developers to create apps for ChatGPT. The company said that it will start accepting app submissions late this year. The company will also inform the developers about the ways in which they will be able to monetise their apps using OpenAI’s new commerce functionality, which will let the users to make purchases directly within ChatGPT.

App directory and featured listings
OpenAI is also introducing an app directory to help users explore the ecosystem. The company has announce that the apps with better design, functionality and higher standards will only feature in the app store.
