NEW DELHI: Multiple explosions were reported across various Pakistani air bases and army bases on Saturday morning, amid heightened tensions in the region. A Reuters witness confirmed blasts at three military bases in the country.

Meanwhile, a full blackout was enforced in Jammu and Kashmir 's Akhnoor on Saturday, with explosions and air raid sirens reported in the area.

Pakistan military spokesperson Lt Gen Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry told a hurriedly called press conference in Islamabad at around 4 am that Nur Khan (Chaklala, Rawalpindi), Murid (Chakwal) and Rafiqui (Shorkot in Jhang district) airbases of Pakistan Air Force were targeted.

"But all assets of the Air Force remain safe," he claimed.

Chaudhry stated that India had fired air-to-surface missiles using fighter jets and that several of these missiles were intercepted by Pakistan's air defence system.

He claimed that "most of the missiles have been intercepted" and asserted that “all Pakistan Air Force assets are safe.”

Sharif further alleged that some of the Indian missiles had landed in India’s eastern Punjab and even in Afghanistan, saying Pakistan has “evidence to prove it.”

Soon after, state-run PTV, citing security sources, claimed Pakistan had launched a counterattack.

The Pakistan Airport Authority (PAA) issued a NOTAM, closing the country's airspace between 3.15 am and 12 noon for all kinds of air traffic. Updates are expected around midday.

Tensions have spiked sharply after armed forces conducted precision strikes on Wednesday against terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

On Friday night, Pakistan reportedly launched drone attacks on 26 sites across India from Jammu and Kashmir to Gujarat. The defence ministry said it had successfully thwarted attempts to hit critical targets like airports and airbases.

On Thursday, air defence units intercepted at least eight missiles fired by Pakistan towards border regions in Jammu, including the strategically important Jammu airport, defence sources told PTI.
