NEW DELHI: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah condemned the Pahalgam 'barbaric and senseless act of brutality' against tourists and said that it is "heartbreaking to see exodus of guests."
Once being the overbooked summer city, now travel operators are gearing up for a wave of cancellations following the attack in Pahalgam, resulting in 28 fatalities, predominantly tourists, with several others injured.
J&K CM Abdullah said that directed the administration to facilitate traffic between Srinagar & Jammu allowing tourist vehicles to leave.
"It’s heartbreaking to see the exodus of our guests from the valley after yesterday’s tragic terror attack in Pahalgam but at the same time we totally understand why people would want to leave. While DGCA & the Ministry of Civil Aviation are working to organise extra flights, NH-44 between Srinagar & Jammu has been reconnected for traffic in a single direction. I’ve directed the administration to facilitate traffic between Srinagar & Jammu allowing tourist vehicles to leave. This will have to be done in a controlled & organised way because the road is still unstable in places and we are also working hard to clear all the stranded vehicles. We will not be able to permit completely free movement of vehicles at the moment & we hope that everyone will cooperate with us," he said.
J-K govt announces Rs 10L ex-gratia for each deceased's family
The state government announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the families of each of those killed in the Pahalgam terror attack on Tuesday. Making the announcement, J-K CM said in a post on X, "Deeply shocked and anguished by the despicable terrorist attack in Pahalgam yesterday. This barbaric and senseless act of brutality against innocent civilians has no place in our society. We condemn it in the strongest possible terms. We mourn the precious lives lost."
While acknowledging that financial aid cannot replace lost lives, the chief minister announced the compensation as a gesture of support and solidarity from the J-K government to the bereaved families.
The administration additionally sanctioned Rs 2 lakh for those with serious injuries and Rs 1 lakh for minor injury cases.
He assured that the injured were receiving optimal medical treatment, expressing solidarity with the grieving families during this difficult period.
The chief minister stated firmly, "Terror will never break our resolve. We will not rest until those behind this barbarity are brought to justic."
