NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia , in a statement on Wednesday, said that the scuffle which broke out on Tuesday night appeared to be a "completely sponsored" incident involving " outside elements " aimed at disrupting the university’s peaceful atmosphere .

The university’s statement read, “It appears to be a completely sponsored incident and there seems to be involvement of some outside elements in it with an attempt to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the university. Everything went on peacefully until 7:30 p.m. when some sloganeering started by unidentified persons . The university administration has filed a formal complaint in the Jamia Nagar Police Station against the unidentified persons in this matter.”

The scuffle erupted during a Diwali celebration on campus, leading to significant chaos and police deployment outside the university. Videos circulating on social media captured the scene, showing a large crowd gathered, with men and women carrying backpacks while slogans echoed in the background.

The altercation created a tense atmosphere, but authorities have since brought the situation under control, with both groups dispersing peacefully. No major injuries were reported, and calm has been restored on the campus.

The exact cause of the scuffle remains unclear, and officials have yet to confirm what triggered the confrontation. This follows a similar incident in May, where three individuals, including two students, were injured after a clash between two groups over a minor dispute involving hostel room arrangements.

Police are closely monitoring the situation, though no further disturbances have been reported at Jamia Millia Islamia.
