Dr Rairu Gopal , popularly known as the ' Two Rupee Doctor ' for providing affordable healthcare , passed away at the age of 80 on Sunday.
Renowned for his selfless service to the community, Dr Gopal dedicated over five decades of his life to provide affordable healthcare and medical consultations for just Rs 2. His services were accessible to the economically disadvantaged section, where he treated more than 18 lakh patients.
Dr Gopal was honoured with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) award for the best family doctor in Kerala.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan paid tribute to the doctor, describing him as “the people's doctor”. “For half a century, he charged only two rupees for consultations, making healthcare accessible to all. His willingness to serve was a great comfort to countless patients,” he said, reported ANI.
Dr Gopal began seeing patients from as early as 3 am, to accommodate students and daily wage workers. He reportedly saw hundreds of patients every day, many of whom regarded him as more than just a doctor.
