NEW DELHI: Rescue teams are still working to pull out a truck that fell into the Mahisagar River after a section of the Gambhira Bridge collapsed in Gujarat’s Vadodara district on Wednesday morning. So far, 13 people have died and several others have been taken to nearby hospitals with injuries.
The incident took place around 7:30 am when a truck, a van, and a car were crossing the bridge. A part of the structure suddenly gave way, causing the vehicles to fall into the river. Locals rushed to help and called emergency services. Police and disaster response teams quickly reached the site and began rescue efforts.
“A portion of the bridge collapsed suddenly. Three vehicles that were passing from that stretch fell into the river. We have initiated rescue operations and 10 people have been pulled out so far,” a fire brigade official told PTI.
The bridge, located about 25 km from Vadodara city, is an important route for transport vehicles heading to Saurashtra.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently on a foreign visit, called Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel to take stock of the situation. He expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the PM’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) has been announced for the families of the deceased, and Rs 50,000 for each injured person.
The Gujarat Congress, meanwhile, has criticised the state government and held it responsible for the collapse.
