President Donald Trump on Wednesday unveiled a new “Presidential Walk of Fame” at the White House, but instead of featuring a portrait of Joe Biden, he displayed a photograph of an autopen machine signing the Democrat’s name — a pointed jab at his predecessor.
The portraits, arranged in chronological order along the West Wing colonnade beside the Rose Garden, showcase past commanders-in-chief in gold frames. When the camera reaches Biden’s spot, the image of the autopen replaces his likeness. “The Presidential Walk of Fame has arrived on the West Wing Colonnade. Wait for it…” Trump’s communications advisor Margo Martin wrote on X, sharing a video of the display.
Trump has repeatedly alleged, without evidence, that Biden relied on the autopen to sign pardons and other documents as part of a cover-up of cognitive decline. “We put up a picture of the autopen,” he said earlier this month in an interview with the conservative Daily Caller, previewing the move.
The White House also posted a photo of Trump, whose own portraits as the 45th and 47th presidents flank Biden’s spot, observing the display. The autopen portrait will be visible to guests attending a dinner in the Rose Garden later Wednesday, where Trump recently replaced the lawn with a stone patio.
The snub marks Trump’s brashest attempt yet to mock his predecessor. The 79-year-old president almost obsessively criticizes the 82-year-old Biden, blaming him for inflation, immigration and conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. At the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, he again attacked Biden in front of world leaders.
Trump has also reshaped the historic White House to his own tastes since returning to office. He has covered the Oval Office in gold accents, installed large flagpoles on the lawns, moved Barack Obama’s portrait from its traditional spot, and broken precedent by hanging multiple portraits of himself. A new ballroom is also under construction.
Critics note that Biden is not the first president to use an autopen — previous administrations have also relied on the device to sign official papers. A Republican-led House committee is currently investigating its use under Biden.
