Bengaluru: In a significant breakthrough using new technology, an impersonator attempting to appear for the UGCET 2025 examination on behalf of another candidate was detected through a QR code-based facial recognition app. The incident took place at Silver Valley Public PU College, located on 7th Cross, Malleswaram.
According to H. Prasanna, Executive Director of the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), the accused, identified as Tuba Fatima Jameel, entered the exam centre on Thursday morning claiming to write the mathematics paper. However, she went straight to the washroom and remained inside for almost an hour.
Just before the examination began, she came out and attempted to enter the exam hall by showing an admit card with a QR code. At this point, the facial recognition app used to capture her photo flagged a mismatch, confirming that she was impersonating another candidate. Before the issue could be reported to the principal, the impersonator fled the premises.
Further investigation revealed that she had replaced the original photo of the actual candidate, Tabu Naaz, on the admit card. Additionally, discrepancies were found in the recorded exam dates. KEA has instructed the college principal to submit a detailed report along with video evidence, based on which legal action will be taken.
New tech helps detect exam fraud
The QR code-based facial recognition system, introduced this year by KEA to identify impersonators, has proven effective. On the second day of the UGCET as well, the entire verification process was conducted using this system without any technical glitches.
KEA officials, including Executive Director H. Prasanna and Administrative Officer Islawuddin Gadyal, personally visited the Government PU College on 18th Cross, Malleswaram, to oversee the implementation of the system. This marks the first time such a facial recognition-based app has been used during KEA exams.
