Google is preparing to introduce ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to its Android Find My Device network, significantly enhancing its tracking capabilities. According to a report by The Verge, the network can now locate lost items four times faster than when it originally launched, following a series of improvements rolled out in 2024.
This enhancement builds upon last year’s major update that introduced offline tracking and extended support for third-party tracking devices. The addition of UWB technology is expected to bring Android’s tracking capabilities closer to Apple’s renowned Find My network.
UWB Integration Expected Soon, Possibly at Google I/O 2025Angela Hsiao, Android Product Manager, confirmed in an interview that UWB technology would soon be incorporated into the Find My Device network. UWB offers far more precise location tracking, enabling users to pinpoint the exact placement of a lost item — for example, locating a device hidden behind a couch, rather than just within a general area.
Currently, the Moto Tag is the only supported tracker featuring UWB on the Android network, but several Android smartphones, including the Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7 Pro, and Pixel 8 Pro, already have built-in UWB capabilities. Recent code developments suggest that the official rollout of UWB support could be announced during Google I/O 2025, scheduled for May 20. However, Google has not yet confirmed an exact release date.
Android’s Tracking Network Nears Parity with Apple’s in High-Density AreasReports also highlight that in densely populated areas with high gadget density, Google’s Find My Device network is now performing comparably to Apple’s tracking system. However, tracking accuracy and reliability may vary in less populated or remote locations depending on the tracker used.
While Google has yet to release its own version of the Apple AirTags, ongoing rumors suggest that a dedicated first-party tracker could be in development. Hsiao emphasized that Google’s internal testing shows the network’s speed has quadrupled due to recent enhancements, bringing a significant improvement to user experience.
To fully utilize UWB-powered precision tracking, users will need compatible smartphones. Devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and the upcoming Google Pixel 9 Pro already support UWB, ensuring broad adoption as the feature becomes available.
