Dhamtari, April 21 With temperatures soaring across Chhattisgarh, the humble matka (clay pot) is making a strong comeback. Locals are increasingly turning to traditional earthen pots to beat the heat and enjoy naturally cooled water, prompting a sharp rise in sales throughout the city.
Natural Coolers in High DemandVendors across popular areas like Itwari Bazaar and Rambagh report a noticeable uptick in matka and surahi sales. Women from the nearby Kumharpara locality are also seen selling these earthen pots door to door in neighborhoods and markets.
“Demand for clay pots always spikes during summer,” says Shankar Kumhkar, a local potter. “We’ve prepared large batches in anticipation of the season.” According to him, prices currently range from ₹120 to ₹150 per pot—about 10% higher than last year due to increased demand and material costs.
Tradition vs. TechnologyWhile refrigerators and water coolers have found a place in most urban households, traditionalists still swear by the taste and health benefits of matka water.
“Only those who truly appreciate the sweet taste of matka water come to buy,” says Murli Kumhkar, another vendor from Kumharpara. “Even though modern appliances have affected our sales, matkas and surahis still hold a steady demand during summer.”
Many potters from nearby villages also bring their handmade clay goods to Dhamtari, seeking to capitalize on the seasonal market.
Health Experts Endorse Matka WaterAccording to Dr. Sandeep Patonda, a senior physician at Bathena Hospital, drinking water from clay pots offers natural health benefits. “Matka water contains essential minerals and remains cool but not excessively cold—ideal for digestion and throat health,” he explains. “Refrigerated water, on the other hand, can lead to conditions like cough, cold, or even fever due to its extreme chill.”
Sustainability and AffordabilityIn an age of rising energy costs and environmental awareness, the matka also presents a sustainable and cost-effective solution. With prices still affordable and natural cooling properties, clay pots are emerging as a healthier alternative to energy-consuming appliances.
Whether for nostalgia, health, or practicality, the traditional matka is proving that age-old wisdom can still thrive in a modern world—especially when summer temperatures soar.
